Transporting foodstuffs

In view of the risk of diseases being introduced into the European Union via travellers, there is a strict prohibition on bringing any personal items of food containing meat and meat products or milk and dairy products into the EU. The exceptions to this are:
  • powdered milk products for infants, baby foods and specific consumables required for medical reasons, on condition that:
    • - the product in question does not require refrigeration before consumption;
    • - the product in question is a packaged, manufacturer's product and
    • - the packaging is intact;
  • personal items of food containing meat and meat products or milk and dairy products from Greenland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the Faeroe Islands and weighing no more than 5 kg;
  • personal items of food containing meat and meat products or milk and dairy products from Andorra, Norway and San Marino.
You can only bring other items of food containing meat and meat products or milk and dairy products into the EU provided that:
  • you obtain the requisite documents from the official state veterinary service of the country in which you are staying, stating that the products in question meet the relevant requirements for import into the EU and
  • declare any and all such products and present the documentation for veterinary inspection when you arrive at the appropriate border control point.

Any and all meat and meat products, or milk and dairy products which fail to comply with these rules must be handed over for official disposal as soon as you arrive within the borders of the EU.

FAILURE TO DECLARE SUCH PRODUCTS MAY RESULT IN THE IMPOSITION OF A FINE OR THE INSTITUTION OF CRIMINAL PROCEEDINGS.

In the case of permitted consumable items of animal origin other than meat and meat products or milk and dairy products, you are allowed to carry up to 1 kg without presenting the products in question for veterinary inspection.
